영어에서 국가명 앞에 정관사 the가 사용되는 사례는 다양합니다. 대표적으로 미국의 경우 the United States of America 처럼 국가명 앞에 the가 쓰입니다. 단, 다양한 예외 상황도 존재하기 때문에 해당 규칙은 유연하게 적용할 필요가 있습니다.

영어로 수량 표현을 하다보면 이상, 이하, 초과, 미만 표현이 각각 실제로 의미상 다름에도 불구하고, 이를 정확하게 구분하지 않고 more than, less than 등으로 혼용하는 것을 흔히 볼 수 있습니다. 특히 수학, 통계 등을 표현하는 과정에서 이를 정확하게 표현하지 않는 것은 의미 자체가 달라질 수 있는 부분이기 때문에 정확한 표현이 사용되어야 합니다.

명사절(noun clause)은 실제 구분은 주어와 동사로 표혀되는 절(clause)의 형태이지만 명사처럼 사용될 수 있어서 명사절이라고 부릅니다. 명사절은 what, whether, that, if 등과 함께 사용되어 문장 내에서 명사처럼 쓰입니다. 명사는 문장 내에서 주어, 보어, 목적어로 사용되거나 전치사 다음에 구(phrase)의 성분으로 사용될 수 있는데, 명사절도 이와 유사하게 사용된다고 이해하면 됩니다.

접속사는 두 문장을 이어주는 역할을 합니다. and(그리고), but(그러나), so(그래서), or(또는) 등은 대표적인 등위접속사입니다. 이외에 because(왜냐하면), before(전에), when(때), while(동안) 등은 종속접속사입니다. 특히 접속사의 구두점 표현, 문장 내 위치 등은 자주 실수하는 부분인만큼 이를 위주로 설명해보겠습니다.

When은 일상회화나 작문에서 정말 자주 사용하게 되는 표현입니다. 질문을 하기 위한 의문사로서 문장 내에서 '부사'의 역할을 하기도 하고, 두 문장을 이어주는 '접속사'로서도 다양하게 활용되기 때문입니다. 특히 when 다음에 분사 구문을 쓰는 표현은 쓰임에 주의가 필요합니다.

비교급은 둘 이상의 대상을 비교할 때, 사용하는 구문입니다. than과 함께 사용하는데, than의 문장성분에 대한 이해를 먼저한다면 비교급에 대한 구조 이해는 의외로 쉽게 파악할 수 있습니다. 비교급을 제대로 사용하기 위해서는 자주 사용되는 문장 패턴을 우선 알고, 각 패턴에서의 비교급을 어떻게 사용하는지를 알아야 됩니다.

영어 단어 중에 특정 단어들은 동사와 형용사의 의미를 동시에 갖고 있는 경우가 있습니다. 형용사와 동사의 의미를 동시에 갖는다는 것은 서술부의 표현에서 be동사와 일반동사로서 동시에 사용이 됨을 의미하기 때문에 문법적으로 옳고 그름을 판단하기에 어려움이 많습니다. 이 경우 문법적 판단보다는 실제 사용된 의미적 구분이 맞는지를 판단하는 것이 더 중요합니다.

(X) When you say your age to somebody, and you use this expression as complement, you should add 's' after the expression of YEAR. (3) There is a 13 years old boy. (X) (4) There is a 13 year old boy. (O) When you indicate someone's age, and the expression is used as adjective in the sentence, you don't have to add 's' after the expression of YEAR.
