[English study] Situational topic - Invitations
Here are some expressions like vocabulary, useful expression, grammar related invitations topic in English. I had reviewed the English class, and left the consequence of the class.
Vocabulary
- good with figures; good with numbers, (cf.) bad with numbers
- good with people; good at making a relationship with people
eg) He is good with people. - tolerant; =patient
- extravagant; spend money too much without thought. not sensible
- hen night; =hen party, a party for virgins
- stag party; a party for bachelors
- sweet 16; an event for high school women student
- grand opening; It's the real opening.
- soft opening; It's not an official opening before the grand opening
- CC; This term comes from "Carbon Copy". When you includes someone in your e-mail, you can use this term.
- hungover; adjective form. hangover is a noun form
- BYOP; Bring Your Own Bottle/Beer)
- baby shower; a celebration for having a new birth
- +1; allow to bring 1 more person with somebody invited
- work long hours; someone usually works for a long time after a regular business hour.
- roughing it; =camping
- cut down; doesn't meant quitting something perfectly. This means just reducing something.
Useful Expression
- resign from the name of the company
eg) I resigned from SH. - quit my job
eg) I quit my job yesterday. - drop/fall down
eg) The temperature is dropping/falling down. - job line-up; something is already done to do something.
eg) I had a job line-up when I resign from SH. - swearing(cursing)/dry sense of humor/dark humor/dirty jokes(mind)
**Those are types of humors.** - the center of attention
**someone is in the attention from people. "Attention horse" is a negative meaning to like to get attention from people too much.** - at the bottom of the list; the situation that something is in the almost last thing from the list.
- plan/throw a party; doing like opening or holding a party.
- going away party; someone is leaving somewhere, this party will be held. We also call it farewell party.
- Toga party; this party is mostly held in old school or university. People wear ancient Greek togas and have a party. It's a kind of theme party.
Grammar Focus
When you use some verbs, you should be aware of using them with infinitive or gerund.
<Verbs + infinitive>
- afford, agree, aim, appear, arrange, ask, care, attempt, choose, dare, decide, demand, deserve, expect, fail, fight, guarantee, happen, he, learn, manage, offer, pretend, promise, refuse, seem, tend, threaten, want, wish
eg) I've arranged to see the doctor on Tuesday.
<Verbs + gerund>
- admit, appreciate, avoid, consider, delay, deny, dislike, enjoy, face, fancy, feel like, finish, forgive, give up, can't help, imagine, keep, look forward to, mind, miss, practice, put off, resist, risk, can't stand, suggest, understand.
eg) Andrew admitted cheating in the exam.
<Verbs + both>
- like, prefer, hate
**You can use infinitive and gerund after these words but there is no meaning ful difference among them.**
Speaking Mistakes
- camping car => AV or trailer
eg) I bought a camping car last month. (Incorrect case)
eg) I bought a trailer to camp last month. (Correct case)
