[English study] Situational topic - Advertising/commercial expressions
Here are some expressions like vocabulary, useful expression, grammar related advertising topic in English. I had reviewed the English class, and left the consequence of the class.
Vocabulary
- pun; it's a kind of joke with the word having two different meaning.
- commercial break; time for the commercial between scenes.
- targeted advertising; when the advertiser makes an advertising with your searching history or purchasing history.
**Advertisement is one of the British English, Advert is an American English expression for it.**
Useful Expression
- year of the horse/rat/rabbit/snake and so on
eg) This year is year of the horse. - soap opera vs drama series
eg) soap opera : General hospital, and so on.
eg) drama series : CSI, Sex and the city, and etc.
**Soap opera usually shows in the afternoon, and it is made cheaply compared to drama series. Drama series shows in more prime time, and of course it is made with more budget. The story of soap opera is more continuous than drama series though.** - At the start of s/th, At the end of s/th
eg) At the start of the sentence, can I put the adverb like this?
Grammar Focus - <Articles>
When you use articles, we commonly use them too much. Here is the example.
eg) I work for the telecommunication company.
**Even if you already mentioned the company before, it is still weird because you have to sat the name of the company after 'work for'. I mean any articles are not allowed in this case.
<The indefinite article - a/an>
When you mention something at the first time, you can use a/an ahead of the noun.
- eg) I want to be a rich person.
Article 'a' is changed when the article follows a noun that has a vowel sound at the start of the word. Here are some examples.
- eg) An LTE network is a brand-new technology these days.
**Apparently sound 'L' is not a vowel, but this guideline is for your pronunciation when you make a sound. The first consonant in the word is a vowel, so the article 'an' is correct in this case.**
<The definite article - the>
- eg) I love the money.
As long as you use a gerund, don't use a article 'the' ahead of it, and in this case, money can't follow the article, 'the', but you can use both of the cases.
- eg) The music that I like the most is K-Pop.
**In this case, you can also use the article, 'the' but normally music is uncountable, so it doesn't follow the article 'the'.
