[English study] Situational topic – Personal Relationships

Here are some expressions like vocabulary, useful expression, grammar related personal relationships topic in English. I had reviewed the English class, and left the consequence of the class.

Vocabulary

  • settle down; be in relax after work a day
  • ask someone out; go one a date with someone
  • go out with someone; go to especially have something for dinner with someone
  • take someone out; go to treat someone for everything
    **However, If you use it as 'take out someone', that means you will terminate someone, so be sure of using it.**
  • grow apart from someone; lose contact with someone
  • put up with someone/something; willing to accept unpleasant one
  • split up with someone; to end a marriage or relationship with someone
  • get over someone/something; overcome a bad person or situation.
  • get along with someone; having a good relationship with someone
  • get together with someone; hanging out with someone
  • turn down someone/something; refuse someone on something but you can also use it when you turn down a kind of knobs
  • warm up with someone/something; to begin to like someone or enjoy something
  • run/bump into someone/something; to meet someone or something unexpectedly or by accident
  • show off to someone(과시하다); to pretend to be different from what someone is in originally.
    **For western people don't understand first baby party in Korea because they just think a baby can't remember that, and it is just like showing off to people by a baby's parents.**
  • make up with someone; being close after the bad situation.
    **By the way, this has another different meanings at the same time. When you use this like "I make up him", it means that you make him more handsome with a makeup. In addition, when you have told that "he made him up", it means he just showed off by himself.**
  • walk out on someone/something; leave someone
  • make out with someone; kissing
    eg) I saw a couple made out on the subway.

Useful Expression

  • lower back
    eg) My lower back is hurting/aching.
    **You don't use an expression about waist, when you are sick of your waist. In this case, you can use the expression, 'lower back'.**
  • skating vs skiing
    eg) I go skiing.
    eg) She is skating tonight.
    **When you want to say a kind of ski or skate, be sure of using this. **
  • private life
    eg) I can talk about my private life to my close friends.
    **When you want to say something like a secret privately, this expression will be a common expression.**
  • drinking buddies
    **If you have some friends for drinking together, we can call them drinking buddies especially for men.**
  • people from somewhere
    **When you use the expression for the people, you can use it with 'from'. Here are some examples below.**
    eg) I have some close friends from high school.
    eg) I have know some people from Mexico.
    eg) People from other countries should be on the different line, when they pass the custom at the airport.
  • on the rebound(반발로)
    **If someone pretend to be different after he or she broke up, we can say "he is on the rebound."**
  • mum vs mom
    **Mum is one of British English(BE) but mom is one of American English(AE).**
  • 17 March vs March 17
    **'17 March' is a kind of British English, mostly US people just express the month first ahead the date.**
  • at the weekend vs on the weekend
    **This is a little bit weird because British English and American English use different preposition for the same meaning. 'At the weekend' is one of British English, 'on the weekend' is one of American English.**
  • love at first sight
    **American people just think that if someone gets married at first sight, it is not a real love. They also express it as lust.**
  • pop the question
    **This idiom means a propose to a woman or man from their partner.**

Grammar Focus - Preposition of Time
When you want to express the right time for something like an appointment, you can say 'in time' or 'on time'. Those are the same meaning but you can't say 'at time'. That is a wrong expression.

Speaking Mistakes

  • The meaning is ~
    eg) The meaning is that you want to go home now. (Weird)
    eg) It means that you want to go home now (Common)
    **Do you think 'meaning' can be defined by itself? That's why it should be expressed by 'It means ~'.**
