[UX] Concept product design idea for foldable display smart phone
Recently new foldable display smart phone like Samsung Galaxy Z fold was launched. Before I start posting a new article, I want to distinguish the definition between folder phone and foldable display smart phone. When we started to use a personal mobile phone, we used the folder phone after just bar phone. That folder phone has just one display and keypad on the body, but this recent foldable display smart phone has 2 displays of each side, and they can be folded. What I want to talk about is this foldable display smart phone.
1. Background
Actually the main technology for this phone is already invented long time ago. As you know, we have seen lots of models to be installed by edge display. Edge display design looks very fancy, but it is approved there is no usefulness to users so much except just aesthetic side. Users should pay more costs to fix the display when it is broken, and there were no application cases on the edge display. Furthermore, housing is also not so much comfortable from the shock while dropping. I already stated this kind of disadvantages in the previous posting. Anyway edge display technology is the same with the foldable display smart phone, but we can understand it is extremely applied to this new generation phone more than before.
2. Present
This product concept is the first one though. I mean honestly this is the second generation of the phone. There has been a defect in the hinge, and people claimed the weakness of the flipped part on the display. People still can see the wrinkle on the part that is flipped, and they said it is even broken easily.
3. Idea innovation
I can understand this kind of new technology is not so much perfect at the very beginning. I don’t want to blame the weakness of the display too. In addition, this manufacture made a good job to improve that quite much. However, I am just disappointed about the design concept. Anyway the durability can be the problem, I would rather choice the fancy design concept as above.
I know this concept also have lots of problems. If they design their product like this, they may have been in the problem that is out of battery so quickly. It is so true dual screen spend more battery than the single one for sure, and they also make the phone support the kind of high resolution.
This requirement may need more battery consumption, and they should have designed the present concept.
However, I just thought about what if they just gave up the display specification and the battery time. If so, they may be able to design this kind of suggested concept. I can also count on their business background because they must want to show up their display specification instead of making people enthusiastic in the design concept.
I think this is the most different thing between company ‘Apple’ and company ‘Samsung’. Samsung invents a new and innovative technology, but Apple steals more money with the design approach from the user’s pocket like a smart ass as they are just waiting for the perfection of the technology.
My point of view is whatever they consider their technology and phone, users must have dissatisfactions on their phone at this kind of new technology.
I mean if I can trade off the specifications, I would rather choose more fancy design than just try to make the phone perfectly because it is the destiny to have the lack of perfection whatever they consider until the battery technology or display technology have been improved.
4. Discussion
I bet most of late majority use this kind of new design platform commonly in the near future, and the related technology will be also improved for sure, and sometimes I hope they can be disruptive in their product design strategy.
