[UX] What are users really needed from the flexible display?
When it comes to flexible/bending display, why do we need it in the phone screen? It applied to the curved edge, but that is not so much useful in life. I agree that is fancy somehow, but it makes the price of the phone higher, and hard to fix the broken screen as well. I would rather design that technology for the zero bezel or dual display than just curved edge if I were a designer of the product.
Recently, a manufacturer launched a new smart phone that is including the flexible display/bending display. (You can see the left image as blow.)
I know technology is becoming on the cutting-edge, by the way, why do we just use this technology? If the technology give us a good advantage when we use it, I think that's fine. However, if it is not necessary to use for that or, there is not too many advantages for us, why do we pay for that technology? Are you rich enough? In that case, that will make sense.
I have a question about this approach. If you use a big display phone that is more than 5.0 inch, how do you grip your phone stably? Don't you grip the side of your phone exactly? How come you handle your phone without THAT part?
When I heard of this idea, it was totally ridiculous. I just think they just want to be proud of development of the technology. That doesn't seem to be for UX at all. Of course, I know some admirers can say that they can easily check their messages on the side as they don't open their flip case.
By the way, do you think you can only see the message from THAT side? I am sure I don't want to show my message to other people. Is it so easy to open your message in public?
If they want to appeal the technology, it would rather be a real zero bezel concept than showing just a bending display for their brand new phone, or their technology can be fully developed like the right image in the image as above. In that case, you can use both sides in your phone (Dual display concept with bending display). I could imagine that I watch a movie on the back side in this concept, and I can catch a call or check the messages on the front side at the same time.
Apparently, Android supports this kind of function like multitasking work, but that's not so comfortable to use the function because we should divide a small screen. As long as your phone has a bigger screen than others, it would not be enough to do that for the function.
If they just give up showing just a shape of the display, they can be more fancy than the ridiculous design that they didn't consider UX at all.
I always say that technology makes our life more convenient, but most of technology just force to be convenient for us. That's a huddle to spread the technology, and that approach blocks people to use the technology.
How come you don't know THAT easy sequence? Please be as smart as you develop the technology.
